We’ve been playing our Watermelon Seed Matching Game and reading The Watermelon Seed by Greg Pizzoli. It’s such watermelon fun!
The Watermelon Seed is such a cute book! The crocodile has eaten watermelon since he was baby (chomp, slurp, burp). He loves it for breakfast, loves it for lunch and, you guessed it, loves it for dinner. But one day, he swallows a seed (gulp). What will happen?!
It goes through some pretty silly scenarios.
I asked my kiddos, “How many seeds do you think he has swallowed since he was a baby?” They looked at me for a second.
My son said, “I think…100!” “Oh my! That’s a lot of seeds, son!” We both giggled.
I thought it would be fun to do a Watermelon Seed Matching Game to help my kiddos with counting and pairs. So, I made a simple watermelon craft and turned it into a game. Watch the video below to see how to make it (steps are typed out below too):
Items You Need for the Craft
- one side of a cereal box (or card stock)
- a cup
- a pencil
- scissors
- red acrylic paint
- green acrylic paint
- foam paint brush
- thin paint brush
- black marker
- blow dryer
How to Make the Watermelon Craft
**watch the YouTube video above for a demonstration or follow the steps below:
Step One. Trace a cup 5 times onto cardboard (I used one side of a cereal box; card stock would work too).
Step Two. Paint the circles red. You can have your kiddos do this step, if you’d like. Blow dry them dry.
Step Three. Paint a green outline around each circle. Blow dry those dry.
Step Four. Cut the circles out.
Step Five. Cut them in half.
Step Six. Draw seeds onto the halves (start with one seed on each half, then two and so on; we’re making a matching and counting game).
Step Seven. Draw an outline between the rind and the flesh of the watermelon halves.
Step Eight. Store in a plastic sandwich baggie until ready to play.
How to Play the Watermelon Seed Matching Game
**watch the YouTube video above for a demonstration or follow the steps below:
Step One. Lay out the watermelon halves out on a table. Mix them up.
Step Two. Have your toddler match the pairs. (Tip: if your toddler is having a hard time recognizing the number as a group, have him count the seeds on each half to find the match).
Here is my son matching the watermelon:
Once your kiddo gets better at matching, make it a timed game (let’s see how fast you can match it! Or how many can you match in 15 seconds?).
