Monster Moon Sand – Sensory Activity

Make this Monster Moon Sand with your kiddos and have such a fun time! Dig your hands in and mold shapes and creatures. Such a fun sensory activity. And it smells like lime!

We have been learning the letter M this week. So, I wanted to make an activity that was hands on for my kiddos to dig their hands into.

And this was the perfect activity that kept them entertained for awhile! Yay! I even got my hands in the Monster Moon Sand. It was fun!

Halloween isn’t for another month and a half, but this activity would be fun to do around that time too. So, we will most likely be doing this again next month!

Surprisingly, my kiddos kept it all in the plastic bin. But, the candy eyes vanished real quick. So, if you don’t want your kiddos eating candy, leave those out. But, then it’s just green moon sand. It was fun while it lasted.

It didn’t stop my daughter from playing with it though. She pretended to make cookies with it.

Monster Moon Sand – Materials

  • 2-3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup coconut oil
  • 3 oz. box lime jello
  • Wilton’s .88 oz candy eyeballs
  • Green food coloring
  • Water

Monster Moon Sand – Instructions

Step 1. Pour 2 cups flour and jello packet into a plastic bin.

Step 2. Put coconut oil in and mix it up with your hands until smooth.

Step 3. Mix 10 drops of food coloring into 2 tablespoons water in a cup.  Pour into the plastic bin and hand mix it until the moon sand is green. Add more drops for more vibrant color.

Step 4. Add a 1/4 cup flour at a time from the remaining flour. You want the moon sand to not be wet, but not too crumbly. So, adding a 1/4 cup flour at a time, until you reach the desired consistency, is great. Ours turned out to be between moon sand and playdoh. We could break it up and start again. And we could mold it into shapes. We used about 2 1/2 cups flour.

Monster Moon Sand – Sensory Play

We added the candy eyeballs in by sprinkling them. I had a wooden M to put in the bin. So, my kiddos would have the letter M to learn while they played. When we were making little monsters, I would say, “M is for Monster and Moon Sand.”

Monster Moon Sand - Sensory Bin

We made a snail, a green snowman, cookies, monsters, aliens, snakes. The possibilities are endless. We would pick up the moon sand to smell it. I asked the kiddos, “what does it smell like?” Limes of course!

Here is one of the monsters my son made:

My daughter kept playing with it for awhile, even though the eyes were gone!

When the kiddos were done, I put a lid on the bin. I hope we play again tomorrow. I will have to let you know how long the moon sand lasts.

I’m thinking a week. If it gets a little dry, I will add a little more oil. No biggie.

I hope you have some Monster Moon Sand fun!
