Earth Day 2018 is on Sunday, April 22nd.
So, we are doing some crafts, reading books and doing a fun worksheet! Whoo hoo!
We did a space unit last year that my son really enjoyed. So, I am so happy that my daughter is old enough to join in on the fun.
You can check out our space week: 16 Space Crafts and Activities for Preschoolers
It was a really fun week!
One of the crafts we did during space week was an Earth craft. Now, my daughter gets to make one too! Yay!
Read on for the DIY Earth Day Craft for Preschoolers and a FREE E is for Earth Worksheet!
Earth Day Craft for Preschoolers – Materials
- Styrofoam ball (we got ours in the floral section at Hobby Lobby)
- blue acrylic paint
- green acrylic paint
- paint brush
- 2 cotton balls
Earth Day Craft for Preschoolers – Instructions
Step One. Set up your workstation. I laid down a paper bag outside and had my kiddos wear their painting clothes.
Step Two. Then, squirt a dab of paint directly onto the paper bag. And, have your preschooler paint the ball blue. Let it dry.
Step Three. Next, have your preschooler paint green spots on the ball for continents. Let it dry.
Step Four. Stretch out 2 cotton balls and have your preschooler stick them to the planet. They stay on because of the texture of the Styrofoam.
You have Planet Earth!
Optional: Cut 2 inches off of a blue/green pipe cleaner, stick both ends in the top of the planet to make a hook, and hang in your preschool room/corner.
Earth Day Activities for Preschoolers
- Go over how to help planet Earth (examples: recycling, picking up trash, riding a bike, conserving water, etc.)
- Talk about some fun facts about Earth (“Earth is the third planet from the sun. Earth spins at 1000 miles an hour. You can’t feel Earth spin. It takes Earth 24 hours to spin all the way around. And Earth tilts toward the sun during summer and away from it during winter.” – source: National Geographic Kids Book of Planets)
- Watch a video about Earth (we watched Structure of the Earth | The Dr. Binocs Show on YouTube)
And, we did a fun E is for Earth worksheet that I created to review the letter E, practice writing the letter E and the word Earth. It’s also a coloring page too! You can get your FREE worksheet by signing up for my newsletter.
I hope you have so much fun on Earth Day! When you make the craft with your preschooler and/or do the worksheet, tag me in a pic on Instagram (@themamaworkshop). I’d love to see how it turns out!
