I made a simple DIY geoboard using cardboard and pushpins for my son. He loves it! It kept him occupied for a long while. Whoo hoo! Make one too!
It has been foggy and cold here the last few days. So, most of our activities have been indoors. Plus, we have been sick. So, that means cranky kiddos and parents. No fun at all.
We’ve thrown cotton balls at each other for an indoor snowball fight. We’ve played pirates. We even made up games.
But, when you’re sick, your creative fuel runs out. I have been at a loss.
Today, at Target, my son grabbed a giant ball of colorful rubber bands. He asked, “Mom, can we get these?” At first I just stared at him thinking, “What the heck are we going to do with those?” I put them in the cart anyway, thinking I’d figure something out.
Sure enough an idea popped in my head while roaming the aisles of Target.
DIY Geoboard for Kids – Materials
- cardboard
- scissors
- hot glue and gun
- 25 push pins
- ball of rubber bands
DIY Geoboard for Kids – Instructions
Step One. Cut 3 squares/rectangles using a cardboard box’s flap. Make certain they are all the same size. Our geoboard ended up being an 8.5in x 6.5in rectangle. My eyeballing skills aren’t always the most reliable. So, eyeballing a square, well…you know how it turned out. No biggie. It will get used all the same.
Step Two. Hot glue the 3 pieces together. This is so the push pins don’t go through the other side and poke things or fingers or hands. Eek!
Step Three. Push the push pins in the board. We did a 5×5 geoboard. My son helped push them in. Teamwork!
Step Four. Make some fun shapes, lines, and letters.
Activity suggestion: set out a deck of ABC flash cards. Draw one card. Have your preschooler try to make the letter on the geoboard. You can do this with shapes too! Using the geoboard is a great fine motor activity.
My son got a little too excited with some of his shape creations and a couple push pins popped off. He just pushed the push pins right back in. But, just in case your preschooler hasn’t had much experience with push pins, please supervise. I still do, even though my son has no trouble using a push pin.
I hope you have so much fun with this simple DIY and make some fun shapes. We made a heart together, since love month is around the corner.
Happy Geoboarding!
