Nature-Inspired DIY Christmas Tree Ornament

My kiddos had fun gathering some leaves and twigs to make this nature-inspired DIY Christmas tree ornament. My daughter may or may not have painted herself. LOL

Now that Thanksgiving is over, it’s time to turn the pumpkins in for Christmas decorations. Eek! This year really flew by.

I have been trying to get us in the Christmas spirit by listening to carols and singing along to them, drinking hot chocolate and watching Polar Express. I think it’s helping a little bit. But, I am not quite there.

So, my son suggested we make a craft.

That is exactly what we did. We made a Christmas Tree Ornament using things we found outside. It’s simple, cute and the kiddos loved finger painting on them.

DIY Christmas Tree Ornament – Materials

  • medium-sized green leaves
  • yellow leaves
  • twigs
  • acrylic paint (we used blue and red)
  • twine
  • pen
  • scissors
  • tape

DIY Christmas Tree Ornament – Instructions

Step One. Have your kiddos find green leaves, yellow leaves and twigs either in your backyard or on a nature walk.

Step Two. Mama, cut the green leaves in a triangle shape.

Step Three. Setup your workstation. I laid out butcher paper outside for my kiddos to paint on.

Step Four. Set your green triangle leaves on the butcher paper, squirt a little red and blue paint onto the paper and demonstrate to your kiddos what to do. Then have them finger paint ornaments onto the leaves.

Step Five. As the leaves are drying, draw stars on the yellow leaves. Cut them out.

Step Six. Once the paint is dry, tape a star on each green leaf.

Step Seven. Tape 2-3 small twigs to the back of the bottom of the tree.

Step Eight. Cut a 2 inch piece of twine for each tree. Loop it and tape to the back of the top of the tree.

You have a Christmas Tree Ornament to hang!

You can ditch the looped twine, make a few more of these and hot glue them to a long piece of twine to make a garland.

It’s so neat the things you can make with nature and things you have around the house. I hope you have fun making these with your kids.
